Your biological age helps us understand how you are living those years and what you can do to age better.

We all know our chronological age, but two people born in the same year can have very different levels of health. Biological clocks analyze different signals from the body to provide a more personalized picture of how we are aging.

Dr. Marta López – Neolife Medical Team

Chronological Age and Biological Age Are Not the Same

Chronological age is straightforward: it is the number of years that have passed since we were born. It cannot be changed and progresses at the same rate for everyone.

Biological age tries to answer a different question: how is our body doing for our age? We see this constantly in clinical practice. There are 60-year-olds with excellent physical capacity, good muscle mass, and optimal metabolic parameters, while others of the same age may experience greater fatigue, inflammation, loss of strength, or several risk factors.

That is why, when we talk about longevity, we are not only interested in adding years to life. We want to understand how we are reaching those years and what we can do to maintain energy, independence, and quality of life for longer.

Living Longer and Living Better: Lifespan vs. Healthspan

In longevity medicine, we distinguish between two closely related concepts. Lifespan is the total length of life: how many years we live. Healthspan, on the other hand, is the amount of time we live in good health, with independence, energy, and the ability to carry out our daily lives normally. It is not simply about adding more years to the calendar, but about making as many of those years as possible years of quality. Knowing our biological age can help us identify which areas deserve greater attention in order to bring these two goals closer together: living longer, but above all, living better.

What Influences Our Biological Age?

Our genes play an important role, but they do not tell the whole story. Diet, exercise, sleep, stress, body composition, and exposure to toxins also leave their mark on the body.

This is good news: we cannot change our date of birth, but we can influence many of the factors that affect how we age.

Biological Clocks: A Snapshot of How We Are Aging

Biological clocks are tools that combine different biomarkers and transform them into an estimate of biological age or aging rate.

We could compare them to a car’s dashboard. The number of kilometers tells us something, but we also want to know the condition of the engine, fuel consumption, tire pressure, or whether there are any warning signals. Something similar happens in our bodies: chronological age is an important piece of information, but it is not the only one.

There are clocks based on clinical tests, proteins, metabolites, medical imaging, or data collected through digital devices. Among the best known are epigenetic clocks, which analyze certain chemical signals in DNA associated with the passage of time, health status, and lifestyle.

Epigenetics: When Lifestyle Communicates with Our Genes

Epigenetics studies how gene activity is regulated without changing the DNA sequence itself. One simple way to understand it is to imagine that DNA is a large instruction manual. Epigenetics helps determine which pages are read more, which are read less, and how the body responds to its environment.

Diet, physical activity, rest, stress, smoking, and metabolic health can all be associated with epigenetic changes. Based on these signals, epigenetic clocks estimate whether our body shows a pattern of aging that is faster, similar to, or slower than expected for our chronological age.

The value of this information is not simply knowing a number. Its importance lies in using it as a starting point to review our habits, identify areas for improvement, and develop a more personalized health strategy.

Telomeres: Protectors of Our Chromosomes

Telomeres are structures located at the ends of chromosomes. Their function is similar to the small plastic tips that protect the ends of shoelaces: they help prevent genetic material from deteriorating.

As time passes and cells undergo successive divisions, telomeres tend to shorten. Their length is influenced by age, but it has also been associated with oxidative stress, inflammation, smoking, sedentary behavior, and other health factors.

Measuring telomere length provides information about cellular aging and adds another piece to the set of data we use to assess how a person is aging.

Can We Improve Our Biological Age?

Biological age should not be understood as a sentence or a fixed label. Its greatest value lies precisely in reminding us that a significant part of how we age is related to modifiable factors.

There are simple measures, although not always easy to maintain, that can make a significant difference:

Maintain good muscle mass and engage in strength training.

Exercise regularly and take care of cardiovascular fitness.

Follow a diet adapted to your individual needs.

Sleep well and maintain healthy rest patterns.

Monitor glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol, and body composition.

Reduce smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and exposure to other toxins.

Take care of stress, emotional health, and social relationships.

Measuring allows us to better understand our starting point. And when we repeat an assessment after some time, we can also observe changes and determine whether the modifications we have introduced are moving us in the right direction.

The Neolife Approach: Measure to Take Action

At Neolife, we understand longevity medicine as preventive, personalized, and data-driven medicine. Our aim is not simply to know how old a person is, but to understand their current health status and identify the areas we can work on to improve their future health.

As part of our assessment, we offer two tests specifically related to biological age:

Telomere length measurement: provides information about cellular aging and the condition of these protective structures at the ends of our chromosomes.

Epigenetic biological age test: analyzes epigenetic signals associated with aging and helps assess how our lifestyle may be influencing this process.

We interpret these results alongside the patient’s medical history, blood tests, body composition, cardiovascular health, muscle mass, exercise, sleep, and lifestyle. In this way, the number stops being an isolated piece of data and becomes a tool for making informed decisions.

Knowing our biological age does not mean predicting the future. It means having more information to take better care of it. Because the goal is not simply to live more years, but to reach those years with greater health, independence, and quality of life.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

(1) de Magalhães JP. Biological aging clocks in health and disease.
