AGING IN WOMEN,
MENOPAUSE

EACH PERSON AGES AT A DIFFERENT PACE. AT NEOLIFE, EACH CHECK-UP AND FOLLOW-UP PROGRAM IS DEFINED IN A PERSONALIZED WAY, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT EACH PATIENT’S INDIVIDUAL CHARACTERISTICS.

Gender makes us different and therefore the effect of aging produces different symptoms and prevalence of diseases. Men and women cope differently with the passing of the years, both physically and emotionally.

For this reason, at Neolife we have experts in aging for both sexes and we have a specific unit for women, with treatments for individuals who are going through perimenopause -from approximately 40-45 years of age-, menopause, and post-menopause.

MENOPAUSE: THE EVOLUTION OF FEMALE HORMONES

Recurso 4

Hormones are one of the aspects of the inner workings of the body that make men and women very different from the moment we are born. The generation of hormones and their levels vary substantially between the sexes.

Menopause occurs because the number of oocytes in the ovaries decreases throughout a woman’s reproductive life until she reaches this stage, in which the ovary stops producing hormones, specifically estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone. This way, menopause produces a metabolic and hormonal imbalance.

If we add to this the impact of lifestyle habits and the imbalance of other markers that decline or increase with age, the alterations increase. Menopause produces changes in the neuroendocrine (neurological and hormonal), cardiovascular, immune, and locomotor systems, negatively impacting mood, memory, cognition, and behavior. Additionally, on a physiological level, it causes an increase in cholesterol and triglyceride levels, failures in calcium uptake in the bones, migraines, headaches, and joint pain.

SYMPTOMS AS AGING OCCURS

Recurso 6

Aging in women causes various symptoms to appear more acutely than in men:

  • Emotional disorders, such as mood swings, irritability or loss of self-esteem
  • Physical disorders, such as vasomotor symptoms (sweating, hot flashes), uncontrolled weight gain, vaginal dryness, and low to no sex drive
  • Sleep disorders and difficulties getting restful sleep
  • Weakened immune system, which causes more urinary tract infections, colds…
3

ONSET OF AGE-RELATED DISEASES

Recurso 3

Hormonal decline not only brings with it the symptoms listed above, but may also have serious consequences in terms of morbidity and mortality.

Both men and women develop the diseases that are characteristic of aging. However, there are differences in the prevalence of certain diseases:

  • Women are much more likely than men to develop central obesity (23.3% of men vs 43.3% of women) and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • By contrast, as they age women tend to develop less high blood pressure (49.9% of men vs 37.1% of women) and type 2 diabetes (42.4% of men aged 61-75 years vs 29.8% of women).
  • Both sexes develop osteopenia and hypercholesterolemia in a similar manner.

LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH

Recurso 5

The main causes of death among women in our environment are cerebrovascular disease, breast cancer, and colon cancer.

WHICH STAGE OF AGING ARE YOU IN?
FIND OUT YOUR DIAGNOSIS

The following questionnaire will help you find out if your symptoms are due to a hormonal imbalance. Menopause can begin insidiously even before the age of 40. Not all the symptoms described below are exclusively due to a hormonal imbalance, but their appearance, together with low or suboptimal hormonal levels, may justify their presence.

The body does not function or react in the same way in all women, so it is essential to measure yourself to find out the real causes of the imbalance and, in this way, to get an accurate and precise diagnosis, and be able to act accordingly.

The slow but steady decline in hormone levels is often the cause of increased diseases (cardiovascular, neurocognitive, osteoporosis, cancer….) and age-related symptoms in women: menopausal symptoms (hot flashes, irritability…), uncontrolled weight gain, sleep disorders, low sex drive, low self-esteem… The following questionnaire will help you find out if your symptoms are due to a hormonal imbalance.
